Words are all around your child. It is our job to bring their attention to the text around them and to help them make sense of it. This post is designed to give you resources and ways to study with your child.
Spelling Words/Vocabulary Words
*First of all, your child's weekly homework is very important. This helps your child retain the information as well as reinforce what is being taught at school. Please make sure your child is completing this every week.
1. Index cards all around! Use the weekly newsletter and your child's homework folder to help you determine what words to focus on studying with your child. Place them EVERYWHERE in your home. Each time your child passes by an area with a word on it, ask them what it is. Wait only three seconds for a response. If they do not know within that time frame, tell them what it is. Repeat, repeat, repeat!!!!!
2. Bang Game Using the weekly newsletter and your child's homework folder again, choose around 5 review words and 2 or 3 new words to begin working on. On large popsicle sticks, print the words. Have a few sticks labeled "Bang!". (You can also use index cards for this.)
To play:
Take turns drawing a stick from a container. If the player can read it, they get to keep it. If they are unable to read it, provide the word to them, and have them return the stick to the container. If a player pulls a "Bang!" stick, they must return all their sticks to the container. Play continues for as long as you wish. The winner is the person who has the most sticks at the end of the set number of turns you decided to take.
3. Sand or Salt Tray Use a container with a lid to store a small amount of sand or salt. Provide your child with a list of words to study. Your child will write the words in the sand and spell them aloud as they write each letter. Example: "like. l-i-k-e, like".
4. Rainbow Writing Have your child write their words with colored pencils or crayons. Start with one color. Then write on top of the word in another color. Repeat this a few times for a fun way to practice.
